Method: plain diffuse, shadows painted in texture?  Perhaps heavy gradient and/or grunge(light) textures in post.
Protagonist and maybe toy are the only 3D elements

More development to come, want him to seem very introverted and shy. Maybe once he goes into the forest his hood gradually comes down. From a distance his silhouette should read somewhat as a little bird.

Notes_story

Computer Animation II: Narrative Centres around a little introverted boy and his softtoy (security object) Setting: On the bus Crowded market place Train station Crowded area. Kid loses toy in the a particularly compressed crowd. Realising he's lost it he turns around and jumps into the crowd after it When he emerges on the inside of the group he is in a new setting: a literal forest of legs, shoes, discarded items and food junks. He explores in wonder. Looking for his toy. SFX:Groaning/creaking Trees are shifting slightly He spies his toy under a massive tree Trees move to block his way (beginning to move more and more) He becomes trapped between two trees inches away from his toy More and more trees surround and trap him CU slowwwww reach for toy Grabs it!!! Zoom back out, it seems too late, kid is trapped under big pile of trees and absorbed (trampled?) into the forest floor BOOM!!!! Toy has transformed into a giant version of itself, carrying with it it's owner. Cut shot to real world, guy in crowd shifts uncomfortably. Trees are becoming unsettled, moving around. Forest is coming apart at the seams! Toy races through a sea of giant leg trees uprooting themselves Bright light from the exit is in sight! Toy and owner bust through! Cuts to real world, kid is holding his toy(back to normal size) and pops out of crowd as it shuffles away. Kid looks back at crowd, a shocked expression on his face. turns around. A new crowd has formed. Kid grabs toy, runs at crowd and jumps in!
